Robert W. Martin is pastor of the Voice of Pentecost in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he has served since 1991. Elected General Superintendent of the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ in 2007, he previously served the organization as Assistant General Superintendent (2001-2007) and as General Youth President (1987-2001). A former teacher, Pastor Martin received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Northeast Louisiana University (now University of Louisiana – Monroe).
The United States of America certainly faces interesting times. Based on our history, it is easy to understand why many in our nation, and especially the black community, are excited about the election of Barack Obama. We have crossed a historical threshold that many thought impossible in our lifetime. That is a credit to the strength of our democracy. However, politics is inherently a partisan beast, and while some rejoice, others are saddened and troubled at future prospects. Many ministers, understandably, do not agree with many of Mr. Obama’s policies or ideas, especially certain moral and social issues.
However, as citizens of the United States and ministers of the Gospel, we should eagerly seize upon our privilege and responsibility to pray for and stand in the gap for elected officials. I Timothy 2:1-2 says, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” Thus, we should gladly provide prayer cover for our newly-elected President, trusting that God will help to guide his steps in the treacherous and uncertain days ahead. As the church we must understand the intersection of our times with the Scriptures.
God places those in leadership per His will. Many interesting, prophetical events are taking place right before our eyes. The church is strategically placed and prophetically poised in the center of God’s will for this day. As Esther, we have been called to the kingdom “for such a time as this.” The church should be excited about the opportunities for revival and harvest in our day. The church remains the brilliant hope for our world. May the Lord help us all to let the light of the Gospel to shine through us individually and corporately, effecting positive change and ushering in the purpose and plan of God in the earth.

Thank you, Pastor Martin! You are a voice of tolerance and restrain at a moment when many Faithful are eager to disparage or dismiss Obama. This is a critical moment in our nation’s history, and I too choose hope over despair.
Well said Bro. Martin , well said . But today is the day to shout even louder from the rooftops the message of the neccesity of Acts 2:38 and a seperated life of HOLINESS standards without waivering and or soft belliedness to the Charaismatic movement . It’s his way or NO WAY .
Yes , I do pray for Barak Obama . I pray diligently for his removal from office and a more moral man with general American interest in mind . Avoiding the Muslim sympathetic nature of the Obama message . If asked my opinion , I’d say his message is an OBAMAnation unto the Lord .
We need to all be SHOUTING the truth as often and as open as we know how . It is our calling and placement in the scheme of things to warn with love , of the perils and perditions that an unholy life , is and will , bring on this nation as it will bring on mankind itself .
