John Freshwater, a popular teacher in the Mount Vernon, Ohio school district regularly brought his Bible to school with him and set it on his desk to have available during personal time. This had been Mr. Freshwater’s routine for decades. However, it was only recently that school officials asked him to remove his Bible from public view while there are students in the room.
In response to this situation and in support of one of their favorite teachers, students started a grassroots movement and declared a “take-your-Bible” day at both the high school and middle school.
Supporters of Mr. Freshwater believe that this is a violation of the First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion. Some have n noted that the school has no policy about the placement of any other personal items on teachers’ desks. Others have drawn attention to the fact that the attack on religious freedom in America is only an attack on Christianity while ‘tolerance’ is being promoted for all other viewpoints.
