The latest published research by the Barna Group demonstrates the rising use of technology among Protestant churches in the U.S. Some of the highlights of this research includes:
- 65% of churches utilize large screen computerized projection systems (up from 39% in 2000).
- 62% of churches have an Internet presence (up from 34% in 2000).
- 56% of churches send out email blasts on a large scale.
- 26% of churches have a presence on a social networking site (e.g. myspace.com, facebook.com).
- 16% of churches host podcasting as a communications tool.
- 13% of churches utilize blog sites or pages containing the thoughts of church leaders.
The research also noted use of technology is significantly less prevalent among small churches.
The study concludes that technology use is here to stay for U.S. churches. Barna commented, “The Internet has become one of the pivotal communications and community-building tools of our lifetime. Churches are well-advised to have an intelligent and foresighted Internet strategy in order to facilitate meaningful ministry.”
