Churches and security measures

30 07 2008

Following the tragic shooting at a Tennessee, Unitarian Universalist church, many churches are now asking what they can do to protect themselves from such attacks.

Jeff Hawkins is a former Chicago police officer who now serves as security chief for Answers In Genesis and the Creation Museum. He says many churches and ministries have adopted the detrimental “it can’t happen here” approach to security.

“They really have to look at it very holistically and look at the overall scope of what can possibly happen inside their churches and then come up with plans, formulate plans and practice the things that they’ve put in place to deal with things when they happen,” he explains.

Hawkins thinks the people most likely to recognize problems before they happen are ushers and other church volunteers. “And they know what looks obvious and what just doesn’t fit,” he continues, “and I think they really need to be trained to recognize the potential of something suspicious, or somebody’s behavior that’s just not acting right and contacting the police immediately, before something happens.”

First Pentecostal Church in Vidor, TX Continues To Impact Community

29 07 2008

Food pantry thrives on faith
Vidor church food pantry began after Rita
By Jennifer Johnson, Staff Writer

Hurricane Rita, now a horror story long past, changed the face of the region – for better and worse. On the worse side of the coin, many are still struggling to rebuild, find suitable housing and restore normality to uprooted and upset lives. On the other hand, however, several individuals and organizations were forced to make drastic changes that, to this day, enhance quality of life and are a welcome change. Such is the case with Vidor’s First Pentecostal Church’s Food Pantry.

In the days immediately following Rita’s landfall, church members and Senior Pastor Bruce Lockett opened the doors of the sanctuary to feed the hundreds of residents stranded in the community without food and used its Sunday School rooms to serve as an emergency MASH hospital. Agencies such as Feed the Children and Operation Blessing hauled in eight truckloads of supplies, valued at $56,000, to assist in the emergency effort and within just two weeks’ time more than 27,000 hot meals were served to those who may have otherwise gone without nourishment for themselves or their children. Countless others received medical treatment.

Susan Richards, now in charge of the church’s food pantry program, first came to the church during the dogged days following the storm in search of food and a friendly face.

Is Rick Warren ignoring sin in search for ‘peace’?

29 07 2008

Rick WarrenDr. Richard D. “Rick” Warren (born January 28, 1954) is the founder and senior pastor of the 22,000 member Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, one of the most famous and influential churches in the world. He is also the best-selling author of many Christian books, including The Purpose Driven Life, and an influential evangelical leader.

Tom McMahon

Christian broadcaster and author Tom McMahon says evangelical pastor Rick Warren’s belief that the church must take the lead in solving the world’s problems of poverty, disease, and war cannot be reconciled with the scriptures.

Pastor Warren will be hosting an interfaith meeting next month with 30 Christian, Jewish, and Muslim leaders “to discuss cooperation for the common good of all Americans.” Warren’s P.E.A.C.E. plan mobilizes churches to address global problems. But McMahon, president of The Berean Call ministry, says the popular Christian author is introducing evangelical Christianity to the social gospel that he learned from his mentor, social scientist Peter Drucker.

“As a Christian, as a biblical Christian, I have real concerns about this because I don’t find this in the scriptures,” McMahon explains. “You see, it’s true the world has all kinds of problems, but he’s working on the symptoms and avoiding the root cause, which is the sin nature of humanity. So how can you work with all kinds of people [who are] called ‘people of faith,’ but it’s not biblical faith?”

Over 70 Colorado Physicians Sign Statement Saying Personhood Begins at Fertilization

29 07 2008

Baby Picture“Personhood Amendment” set to appear on 2008 Colorado ballot

DENVER, Colorado, July 28, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Colorado for Equal Rights has announced the support of over 70 physicians and pharmacists, including neonatologists, family physicians, ob-gyns, pediatricians, and other physicians nationwide. These physicians have stated that they concur with the statement, “A ‘person’ includes any human from the time of fertilization.” A list of these physicians is available at http://www.personhood2008.com
“We are honored to have received these endorsements from such respected physicians,” stated Kristi Burton, the sponsor of the “Personhood Amendment” which is set to appear on the 2008 Colorado ballot. “Science clearly proves that life begins at the time of fertilization. We are secure in the fact that we have science and reason on our side, and we are pleased to have the medical community supporting our efforts.”
Sponsored by Burton, a 20-year-old law student, the Personhood Amendment states: “Be it Enacted by the People of the State of Colorado…the terms ‘person’ or ‘persons’ shall include any human being from the moment of fertilization.”
“As support for Amendment 48 accumulates, we are very encouraged as we get closer to November’s election,” continued Burton. “Every human life should be protected, and the endorsements we continue to receive prove that our easy to understand amendment is one that all Coloradans can support.”

Prayer targets world’s 3rd largest mission field – America

28 07 2008

‘Every great movement of God can be traced to a kneeling figure’

A blanket of prayer for America is being proposed for Sept. 11, 2008, the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, because it no longer is the Christian nation it once was, according to a coalition of organizations.

“America used to send out missionaries,” Matti Stevenson, a spokeswoman for the effort, told WND. “Now it’s the third-largest mission field itself. People from Africa are coming to help us. What does that say?

“It just takes my breath away,” she said.

The project is called “Cry Out America” and intends to have a prayer vigil in every county – all 3,141 of them – on that day. It’s being assembled by the Awakening America Alliance, a non-partisan, broad coalition of Christian leaders, denominations, churches, ministries and others.

Denham Springs Youth Choir Featured in Newspaper

28 07 2008

On Sunday, July 20th Johnson City was flooded with Louisianans. The First Pentecostal Church from Denham Springs, Louisiana, youth choir came to town to share their love for God, and their passion for worshipping – with the H.O.M.E. Church on Sunday morning.

Their youth choir comprised of approximately 80 voices ranging in ages from 13 all the way to 20 something’s. This particular trip was their first musical tour in about three years, even though they have actually been on numerous tours all over the country in the past 10-15 years.

The bus full of young people left Denham Springs last Friday, and sang at a church in Victoria, TX. They then spent Saturday at Six Flags in San Antonio, before making their final stop in Johnson City on Sunday morning.

The youth choir sang a number of contemporary worship songs, and then they began to disseminate into the congregation and pray with individuals who were worshipping.

But these young people aren’t just all business. Raelyn Jeffers explained what bus life was like on the tour. “We really have a great time on the bus. Our youth group runs around 200-300 young people, so you don’t always know everyone as well as you might like to. Traveling on a bus – you get to know everyone better than you might want to!” she said. Caleb Thorpe, 16, added “the bus is a lot of fun…we play Catch Phrase, 20 Questions, and Mafia… it’s great,” he said.

The choir’s latest album is called “Addicted to Worship 2008.” It features a number of their worship songs and is sold for $15. “I love listening to their CD,” local Johnson City resident Rebekah Sellers, 12, said. “It just makes me happy.”
