Lately, I’ve been thinking about a report I read a year or so ago.  The report was based on a national survey sponsored by Christianity Today International and Zondervan Publishers and found in the Leadership magazine.  The report said that there were five kinds of Christians in America.

Rather than grouping these folks by their individual denominations, the survey groups them by their overall beliefs.  The five types of Christians are:

Blog: Are we ready for a Pentecostal Vice-President?

4 09 2008

In his latest blog post, Reverend Ken Gurley, a UPC Pastor, asks the question: Are we ready for a Pentecostal Vice-President?

Sarah Palin, Republican nominee for Vice President, has attended a Pentecostal church for most of her life.  As a child, she was baptized Catholic, but began attending an Assemblies of God church when she was a young girl.  Until just a few years ago, she continued to attend the same Pentecostal church in Wasilla.

Palin’s meteoric rise caught most Americans off guard.  Few knew who she was and why she was considered.

But, when Pentecostals heard her speak and saw pictures of her, they did not need to be told that she had Pentecostal roots.  Her dress, hair, bearing, and zeal spoke for her.  More than one Pentecostal told me, “I knew she was Pentecostal from the moment I laid eyes on her.”

China in Bible Prophecy?

11 08 2008

In his latest blog post, Reverend Ken Gurley, a UPC Pastor, discusses the role of China in Bible prophey.

Where does China fit into Bible prophecy?  Some Bible scholars claim to know the answer to this.

A number of Bible scholars (1, 2, 3) argue that China is included in the “kings of the east” attacking Israel (Revelation 16, Zechariah 14).  The final battle, called Armageddon, ends with Christ’s Second Coming and His fighting for Israel (Revelation 19:11-18).

Some point to a more optimistic prophecy concerning China (1, 2, 3).  Viewing Isaiah’s prophecy concerning Sinim to be China, the prophet suggests the nation will open its borders and that salvation will come to its people (Isaiah 49:10-12).

Blog: The Dangers of Using Email

1 08 2008

Editor’s Note: Brian Fegter over at Mister Nifty has written a thought provoking piece about the dangers of using email. What do you think? Agree, disagree? Leave a comment below.

It goes without saying that email has become part of the landscape of our communication methods.  With this happy medium comes some dangers.  I never deal with personal issues over email.  Here are reasons I do not use email for communication that involves anything other than setting up appointments or sharing data.

  • Emails contain no body language or vocal inflection.
  • They are easily misconstrued.
  • Emails are cold and heartless.
  • They do not reveal true motivations.
  • Emails are permanent and searchable.
  • Emails can be used against me at a later date.
  • Emails can be forwarded to other parties.
  • Taking care of negative situations on email is not Biblical.

I have developed a policy for our church staff when dealing with controversy.  The first priority is to do it face-to-face as the Bible says to go to the person with whom you have the offense.  Last resort is to take care of it over the phone if both parties are not in proximity.   They are to never use email.  The Bible clearly talks about the spoken word when dealing with controversy.  God wants controversy to be cleared up and there to be peace and unity within the body.  If your controversy is archived, it can never be completely cleared up and reconciliation will always have a contingency plan.

Blog: Two Things Pastors Should Learn from Barack Obama

1 06 2008

Editor’s Note: The following is from a Crosswalk.com blog and is not Apostolic in nature. Pastors might be interested in the article and find it relevant, and at the very least, thought provoking. Click HERE to view the full post. The following is an excerpt from the article:

Dr. Ray Pritchard

Yesterday Barack Obama bowed to inevitable reality and resigned his membership at Trinity United Church in Chicago. He did what he had to do given a) his desire to be president, and b) all the publicity swirling around the controversial statements of his former pastor, Dr. Jeremiah Wright, and last Sunday’s guest preacher, Father Michael Pfleger.

I can see a small lesson and a larger lesson here for pastors. The small lesson is that in the Internet age, everything we say is being recorded somewhere. There was a time–and it wasn’t so long ago–that a pastor could unburden himself to his Wednesday Bible study, knowing that his words were not being recorded and would not show up later on YouTube. I call this the small lesson because it ought to be obvious to all of us that personal privacy is rapidly disappearing. The day is long past when pastors can get away with loose talk or casual jokes or offhand remarks. They can’t say, “This is just for the church family,” because someone with a cell phone will soon send it around the world.

‘Gay day’ events largely unsuccessful on school campuses

20 05 2008

Conservative Christian pro-family groups are encouraged at the reported lack of success for the national ‘Day of Silence’ events that were planned in schools for April 25.

Many Christian student objectors staged walk-outs and other protests to counter the event.  Many parents also voiced their objections with regards to schools sponsorship of related “Day of Silence’ events.  It has been reported that hundreds of schools canceled events in response to parent and student objections. Pro-family organizations and Christian advocacy groups received thousands of emails from students and parents communicating their involvement in “Day of Silence’ protests.

Organizers of the ‘Day of Silence’ claim the day was about bringing attention to violence against homosexual students in schools.  Objectors, however, were adamant that the true purpose of the event was to rally support for and acceptance of homosexual lifestyles.
